Custom nets have a long, history dating back before the stone age. In fact some nets from the stone age don’t look much different from contemporary nets used for batting cages.

Nets can be made from almost any sort of fiber, but most nets built today are made from synthetic materials.

Nets have a wide range of applications including transportation, animal containment, furniture, clothing, safety, and the types of nets that we’re most familiar with here at Practice Sports, sports nets.

We can’t claim to be experts on these other types of netting, though we have done nets for wildlife containment in the past; protip: be sure the nets are nontoxic, however we can build a custom net to any size and shape that you need.

Know Your Dimensions

Custom nets are typically sold by the square foot, so be sure to know your dimensions. If you’re doing a barrier type net, this calculation is pretty straight-forward: length times width.

Tunnel style nets are built by sewing multiple panels together. For instance, a standard size batting cage, 12 ft high, 14 ft wide, and 70 ft long will be made up of 5 panels. (2) 12 x 70 foot panels, (2) 12 x 14 ft panels, and (1) 14 x 70 ft ceiling panel. Additional charges for assembly may also apply.

Gauge Your Gauge

The thickness of the twine (referred to as gauge) will also affect the price. Generally, the thicker the twine, the more material that is required to build the net. That means the net will be more expensive, but also more durable. Hopefully.

Mesh Size Matters. But What is It?

When building your net, you’ll also want to keep in mind the mesh size. Mesh size refers to how large the holes in the net are. (Every net has holes. Holes in nets are a feature, not a bug. Every net you buy from Practice Sports, will have holes. That is our promise to you. If you bought a net without holes, you didn’t buy it from Practice Sports. And you did not buy a net. I’m not sure what it was you bought, but it wasn’t a net.) For instance the mesh size of a baseball net is typically 1-7/8 inches to ensure that a baseball doesn’t escape. Golf nets require a much smaller mesh size. That means more material is required to build the net, making it more expensive. When determining your mesh size keep in mind what it is you’re trying to contain.

Netting Material

The cost of your net can also be affected by the material that it is made of. Most nets are made of synthetic materials. For instance, we use two type of materials to make our sports nets, poly and nylon. Typically poly is more of a backyard, hobby material and nylon is more of a professional material.

Indoors Or Outdoors?

If your custom net is going to be used outdoors, you’ll want to make sure it can stand up to the elements. Some netting materials, like nylon, require an additional treatment to be weatherproof.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Why is knotted netting considered better than knotless?

This is because the knotted netting holds it’s mesh shape better. The knotted netting is tied at every mesh corner. The knotless isn’t which means there’s the possibility of balls getting through the material.

Can you make any shape net?

Yes, we can make any custom size net. It doesn’t have to be a square or rectangle if you’re looking for a flat panel. We can make a net with different length sides. On the tunnels, we can make nets with varying heights or widths. The measurements don’t have to uniform throughout. We do request the customer provided a custom sketch in most cases to ensure the net is built to the correct specs.

How much room do I need to install a net?

The size of the net just depends on the type of activities. If you’re just using the net for tee work you really only need a smaller cage. Just keep in mind you want to keep a minimum of one foot of space between the nets and any obstructions. This includes walls or any other item the balls can damage.

Do you make netting for golf?

We do make a golf size mesh. The mesh is a 3/4″ (measured diagonally). It’s perfect for golf ball containment.

Is there a minimum size net you can make?

There isn’t a minimum size but there is a minimum purchase of $100 for a custom built net.
