Multi-Sport Court Installation in Omaha

Play, Inc. & Practice Sports offers complete turnkey basketball and sports athletic multi-game court installations services, from ground-work excavation & concrete, to basketball hoops and netting.

Below is a project profile of an outdoor sports flooring court installation performed by Play, Inc. in Papillion / Omaha, Nebraska.

2015-10-01 15.27.49

The job-site was evaluated for slope, and scope of work was identified. The client wanted a 70′ x 30′ concrete court, which required several inches of excavation & leveling, as well as the existing patio radius arcs cut & removed.

2015-10-05 12.09.05

After all utilities were marked, the foot-print was staked off, a transit level was used to identify elevation grade, and excavation began.

2015-10-05 12.14.23

The radius arcs on the patio were broken and hauled away to make more room for the court.

2015-10-08 13.53.25

The basketball court footprint was completely excavated and “spoils” were removed and disposed off.

2015-10-09 13.44.41Next up, crushed rock aka “road-base” is added to give the ground stability and allow for proper drainage under the pad. In Omaha, Nebraska, we typically build a 4-8″ sub-base of compacted aggregate due to the extreme temperature changes. Without this, the soil directly under the concrete would be saturated, and during the freeze – thaw cycles the ground would heave up and down, causing cracking on the concrete surface. The majority of all concrete cracks are not caused by bad concrete or improper concrete pouring, rather they are due to poor sub-base soil.

The crushed rock is leveled & compacted to give it structural stability to hold form.

2015-10-13 12.22.53

Now the wood forms are added, to create grids to identify the pour areas. Concrete pads must be poured in iterations, to allow for relief joints so the concrete can flex / shift while settling – otherwise cracking would occur.

2015-10-14 13.35.33

Now concrete blocks are added to create a retaining wall in the area where the slope was the steepest. Without a retaining wall the soil would cave in over time, when exposed to the stress of water run-off & erosion. A professional concrete pad can’t happen without proper retaining wall installation.

2015-10-14 13.39.42

The wall is checked with a level throughout the process. Retaining walls are a tedious process but must be precise!

2015-10-14 14.04.33-1

A strip of heavy-duty rubber expansion joint material is added between the crushed rock base and the wall. This allows for the concrete to flex during settling without colliding with the concrete block wall. When concrete meets block, bad things happen and the concrete usually loses!

2015-10-24 10.56.12

To prepare for the pour, a wire mesh is added on top of the crushed rock to help give the concrete stability, and the block retaining wall is covered to avoid being splashed with concrete mix.

Now the fun yet grueling labor part – the pour. Let’s get dirty!

And we’re done! At least with the concrete finishing work. What do you think?

The rim is double-checked to ensure the hoop is completely level. If not, the pole can be adjusted at the base.

    Hello,
I live in Elkhorn and was wondering how much it would cost to install a half basketball court (with hoop and top layer of duracourt, etc) in our backyard. There is a bit of a slope, so not sure how much that interferes with plans.

    Thanks,
    JJ
