Custom windscreens (shade screens, privacy screens) are very useful for a wide variety of applications.

Tennis courts, baseball / softball fields, residential and even construction sites benefit from a quality windscreen. However, selecting a custom windscreen is a confusing process to the novice.

The result is often over or under-buying, resulting in the wrong material for your application, which can be costly. Not to mention the headaches with maintenance due to screens falling apart prematurely. The worst scenario is spending hundreds of dollars, dozens of hours installing, only to have the windscreens tear after a couple of windy seasons.

We’re here to help!

Check-out the windscreen comparison review below. It will help you identify the pros and cons for each material to help narrow down your search.

Our Experience with Custom Windscreens

Our vinyl and fabric shops have been building custom windscreens for more than 25 years. We use the highest quality products and techniques. and are proud to offer the widest variety of windscreens in the business.

Applications

  • Tennis Courts
  • Baseball / Softball Fields
  • Parks
  • Golf Courses
  • Home & Garden
  • Construction sites
  • Mountain ski resorts

Benefits

  • Improved appearance: upgrade chain-link fences overnight
  • Privacy: excellent for city parks on busy streets
  • Wind reduction: helps minimize gusts which may affect events
  • Shade: makes tennis courts & ballparks more comfortable during hot summer months
  • Block distractions: allows your players to focus on what’s in front of them
  • Excellent visual background for players: helps baseball and tennis players see the ball better, referred to in baseball as the “batter’s eye

Custom Windscreen Sizes

Our windscreens come standard in 6 or 9 foot high, but are customizable to ANY height or length.

We recommend ordering larger windscreens in 50 foot increments for ease of installation and future maintenance, which allows easy removal/replacement when necessary.

When Ordering a Custom Windscreen for a Fence

TIP: Some windscreens are manufactured slightly shorter than conventional fence sizes, which makes installation easier and allows the screen to stretch properly reducing wrinkles. For example, many fences are 4′, 6′ or 8’ with proper windscreen sizes of 3’8″, 5’8″ or 7’8″ respectively (give or take an inch).

Material Types for Custom Windscreens

ArmorMesh with Heat-Sealed Seams

VCP / VCM

Vinyl Coated Polyester (VCP), also known as Vinyl Coated Mesh (VCM), is a higher quality product often manufactured in the United States. However, quality can vary widely so do some research before ordering.

Designed using 50% vinyl and 50% polyester, vinyl coated windscreens are some of the most durable windscreens available, which is optimal for baseball fields, tennis courts, and other high-wind areas.

Coated screens are designed to withstand the elements, will not fray when cut and will even allow your personal silk-screen logos to adhere nicely.

  • Pros: Economical material available in lighter ounces (8 oz). Can be very durable in higher ounces (14 oz).
  • Con: Being a coated product, the coating eventually wears away, causing material to become brittle.

Polyethylene

A plastic-based material, commonly used in plastic applications like soda bottles and netting.

  • Pro: Heavy-duty material, durable in all climates. Extruded black material, will never fade or chip.
  • Con: Plastic-based material which can be bulky and rigid.
  • Tips: Knitted is superior than woven. High-density knitted polyethylene is the best.

Open Mesh

Polypropylene

Another plastic-based material used in a wide variety of sports and consumer applications. Typically used indoors due to lower quality material.

Open mesh windscreens allow more airflow, are lighter weight and more economical. These screens are not recommended for high-wind areas & long-term use.

Pro: Softer material takes up less space when folded.
Cons: Weaker overall material tends to become brittle after exposure to harsh conditions.

Closed Mesh Polypropylene

Yet another plastic-based material used in a variety of sports and consumer applications. Typically used indoors due to lower quality material.

Closed mesh windscreens allow limited airflow and work great for applications requiring increased privacy and greatly reduced air/light flow.

  • Pro: Softer material takes up less space when folded.
  • Cons: Weaker overall material tends to become brittle after exposure to harsh conditions.

Privacy Screens

Great for applications requiring increased privacy and greatly reduced air/light flow. Common applications are school gym divider curtains.

Trade Names

  • Tuffy (10 oz VCP) — 5 year warranty
  • ArmorMesh (14 oz VCP) — 5 year warranty
  • Privascreen (5.5 oz Polyethylene) — 4 year warranty
  • Extreme Screen (9 oz Polyethylene) — 7 year warranty

Features & Accessories

The details of a windscreen are what sets it apart and will affect its life span.

Standard Windscreen Features

  • EMBEDDED UV inhibitors for maximum sun protection (contrast to surface coated inhibitors).
  • Brass tooth grommets spaced 18” on ALL FOUR sides.
  • Windscreens taller than 6 feet now come with a free CENTER “lacing lip” with additional grommets to secure the windscreens in the middle, which helps prevent billowing and breakage from wind.
Brass grommets on bound reinforced hems.

Logo Printing for Custom Windscreens

Add team logos and lettering to custom windscreens to give your fence a professional touch. Windscreens with logos encourage team spirit. They can also advertise sponsors to help pay for the field.

Digital Printing

Pros

  • Economical
  • Efficient
  • Wide variety of colors for same cost

Cons

  • Ink has shorter lifespan than paint
  • Logos are not as bright after years of use compared to painted / screen-printed logos
  • Some logos / letters are sewn to windscreens, which creates two layers
  • Logos may have white mesh backing

Screen Printing / Painting (Chroma-Bond)

Pros

  • Extremely durable
  • Longer lifespan than digitally printed logos
  • Always maintains brightness
  • Crisper appearance than digital

Cons

  • Much more expensive than digital logos
  • Longer overall process
  • Multiple colors require additional screens / up-charge

Added Features for Custom Windscreens

Air Vents (Half Moon or Rectangle)

Air vents are available in half moon or 6” x 12” block style and recommended for high-wind areas. They help with airflow and prevent damage to the windscreens. These are installed just above the lacing lip with a recommended spacing of every 8 to 12 feet.

Lacing Lip / Grommet Line

A hemmed row of reinforced fabric and grommets adds an attachment point and reduces movement from wind, which greatly reduces stress on screens; therefore, extending the lifespan of screens in windy areas.

Custom-sized windscreens include lacing lips at seam points and all screens taller than six feet include mid-point lacing lips. Additionally, lacing lips are available for purchase.

Colors for Custom Windscreens

Custom windscreens are available in a full spectrum of colors, which allows you to match your team colors and highlight the area. Darker colors are optimal because they provide a dark background. Specifically, forest green and black are the most popular options.

We can build with multiple colors to match your team colors. For example, a popular style is a two color combo with a base color on the bottom 80% and a 2nd color on the top 20% for a highlight.

At this point, you have probably learned far more about windscreens than you ever thought you wanted to know.

      Hi Tina,
Thanks for contacting us. What color would you like and did you want a quote for an economical, mid-grade, or heavy duty option? Regarding the height, do you have grass right up against the fence? If so, then you probably want to go a few inches shorter than the 6′ fence height in order to trim below the windscreen and give yourself enough space where there’s no chance of hitting the screen.

      Thanks,

      Cory
