Since winter is rapidly approaching, now is the time to consider taking down your outdoor net. Leaving netting up year round in climates that freeze can drastically reduce the life-span of your net. When the netting retains moisture and freezes, it makes the material brittle and more susceptible to fraying. It would be ideal to take it down even in tepid climates if it won’t be used for an extended period 2-5 months. Here are some tips to help you with storage:

Mind the Rodents:

For some reason netting tends to be an ideal nesting material for rats, mice, etc. We’ve had plenty of feedback from customers getting out their net in the spring and wondering why the netting would come apart while just sitting during the winter. The answer is always some animal got in there and chewed out portions of the net. The best way to combat this is to find a large container to keep the net in. Most department stores sell those heavy plastic bins with lids which are ideal for this use.

Dry Netting:

As you probably can assume, it’s important to keep your net dry. Chances are low that any type of mold can seep into the material but prolonged exposure to damp conditions will greatly increase the chance of mold growing in the netting material. This typically isn’t an issue in cold winter climates since the air tends to be much dryer than that of warmer climates. What we’re referring to is the net basically sitting in standing water or being in an extremely wet coastal location. If this is the case you’ll want to use a container that is airtight or use several layers of plastic and even a tight vinyl wrapping to keep the moisture out.
